41 YEARS LATER, BACK TO CASABLANCA
Here’s a lovely full-circle Waterloo story.
On September 18, 1985, Princess Cinemas opened with a $5,000 loan, two 16mm projectors and Casablanca.
This Friday, exactly 41 years later, they’re showing it again, this time inside the newly renovated Princess Twin with bigger screens, comfier seats and more legroom.
Then they’re taking the birthday outside.
Princess Street between King and Dorset closes to traffic, and at 9 PM it becomes an outdoor cinema for a free screening of Buena Vista Social Club.

This is bigger than I realize.
The Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour travels to 500+ locations in 45 countries, and Princess has been bringing it to Waterloo since 1987.
Next Wednesday, a completely new program called CREVASSE comes to the Original Princess. None of these films have screened in Waterloo before.

This Saturday might be one of my favourite days of the year. Doors Open Waterloo Region is giving us a peek inside 27 fascinating places across the region, all for free.
You can explore an 1835 cheese factory in a vanished village, step inside Waterloo Region’s oldest buildings, wander through Perimeter Institute or try camp activities on the shores of Paradise Lake. It all happens September 19 from 10 AM to 4 PM. Most sites require no registration, but check before heading out because a few, including Perimeter Institute, require free tickets.
